Prelude to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, 2009

In two days, I am off to embark on a return to the Melbourne Comedy Festival for the first time since 2002, which was my then third visit to the festival, all in consecutive years. Now I’m trying to recapture some of my interests from my youth, partially in the hopes of re-finding myself. I am incredibly thankful that my mother-in-law will be coming along for some of that time so we can also spend some time together, and it will perhaps remind me of my first trip to the festival with my own mum. I am looking forward to showing her around Melbourne during the days, as it has changed considerably since she was last there (which was before even my first trip to Melbourne!) I know she’ll also enjoy the added time with my son, Doyle, since she can’t just come visit whenever she wants to see him since we moved to another country.

Although I am sure some may judge me as selfish for allowing my MIL to come with us for this holiday so she can babysit on evenings I want to go out to see shows at the festival, and I admit I probably am at least a little that way, we at least secured some accommodation through our holiday timeshare program APVC, which includes a kitchen in our apartment, thereby considerably reducing all of our costs. I’ve needed to return to this festival for some time, so I am very grateful for the opportunity, and those who are helping me achieve this goal.

Anyway, in case any of my local Melbourne friends are interested in joining me for any of the shows I am seeing, I thought I’d post my programme of what I currently have purchased tickets:
Thursday 16th April
3pm-4:15pm: Potted Potter:The Unauthorised Harry Experience A Parody by Dan and Jeff (my son is coming along to this with me, and he gets in for free by sitting on my lap because he’s only 2)

Saturday 18th April
2pm-4pm: Good News Week (though I presume tickets are probably sold out by now; I’m going alone and my husband will be looking after my son for this)

Monday 20th April
6:30pm-7:30pm: The Legal Comedy Debate – Lawyers or God: Who Do You Want on Your Side?
8:15pm-9:15pm: Eddie Ifft

Tuesday 21st April
9:45pm-10:45pm: Reginald D Hunter – No Country For Grown Men

Wednesday 22nd April
8:30pm-11:30pm: 3 for 1 live @ The Comics Lounge featuring Corinne Grant and Hung Le

Thursday 23rd April
7:15pm-8:15pm: Josh Earl is XXVII

Friday 24th April
7:15pm-8:15pm: Danny McGinlay – Food Dude
9:15pm-10:25pm: Spontaneous Broadway
10:45pm-11:45pm: Xavier Michelides – The Post Apocalyptic Users’ Guide

And that’s it. It’s not as much compared to what I’ve done in the past, but I didn’t want to take advantage of others’ goodwill too much, and having to pay adult ticket prices now makes it more expensive. I may still see something else on tight arse Tuesday, but I don’t think I’ll decide for sure until I am actually in Melbourne, because there are a few different shows on at the same time I’d really like to see. Such is life, I guess! At least our hotel isn’t actually too far from most of the event locations.

And after my MIL leaves, I look forward to attending a lunch for a friend’s 30th birthday, and catching up with a few other friends when I can. I’m really feeling the pang of missing Melbourne and my friends who live there right now.
